½ Cup soft shortening (prefer butter)
¼ C. brown sugar
1 Egg yolk (save white)
½ Teaspoon vanilla
1 Cup sifted flour
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ Cup finely chopped nuts

Mix together first 4 ingredients. Sift together and stir in next 2 ingredients. Roll into 1” balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg whites. Roll in finely chopped nuts. Place about 1” apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 5 minutes in 350º oven. Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer. Cool. Place in thumbprints a bit of chopped candied fruit, sparkling jelly or tinted confectioners’ sugar icing.
